The initiative to conduct a Special Course for ASEM Diplomats was announced by India at the 10th ASEM Summit in Milan on 16-17 October 2014 and was listed in the ASEM Work Programme for 2014-16. The objective of the ASEM Course is to enhance awareness about issues in international politics and diplomacy and inter alia familiarize participants with various facets of India’s foreign policy. This is an intensive one-week long course on Diplomacy and Foreign Policy – an Indian perspective for diplomats from ASEM member countries. The course is organized by the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service of the Ministry of External Affairs. Nominations are usually invited from a regular Foreign Service Officer, aged below 40 with a minimum 2 years of diplomatic experience and proficiency in English who are posted in their respective headquarters and have never visited India. Each ASEM member can nominate one diplomat for the course. Costs towards air travel are borne by the sending country. SSIFS arranges local transportation and accommodation. There is no course fee.
